How to Perform a Skin Check on Yourself

July 13, 2020
Skin cancer is one of the few cancers that if caught early, can be treated, including melanoma, the deadliest form of the disease. In addition to your yearly skin evaluation with a dermatologist, another important key in prevention and successful treatment is performing a personal skin exam. When the disease is found early, the survival rate is an amazing 99%.
The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends you perform a skin check monthly to help identify any changing lesions that might be cancerous or precancerous. If you do find something atypical, it’s important you see one of our board-certified dermatologists at West Dermatology, who are specialists in skin cancer diagnosis and treatment. They can then conduct a more thorough exam to determine whether or not the abnormality is potentially harmful.

Learn What to Look for with Skin Cancer

First, don’t be alarmed if you find a mole or two (or more). A normal mole is smooth to the touch and has a consistent color, be it brown, black, or tan. It has a consistent border, as well, and is oval or round, and it could have a flat or raised profile.

An irregular mole that you should have checked more comprehensively has an irregular shape or jagged border. It’s rough to the touch and is often a combination of colors: various shades of brown throughout the lesion or a mixture of red, white, and/or blue.

In addition, be aware of new spots or lesions, or look for older ones that have changed in color, shape, size, or texture. Furthermore, be on the lookout for atypical sores, lumps, or blemishes, especially ones that crust over, bleed, itch, ooze, and itch as well as cause pain or are tender to the touch.

What You’ll Need to Perform a Skin Check

Although you can adequately perform a skin check any time, doing so at shower or bath time, is convenient, as you’ll already be naked. It doesn’t matter if it’s before or after, but looking at as much skin as possible is a must. If available, enlist the help of a partner, as a second pair of eyes is always a good idea to make sure nothing is missed, particularly on the scalp or back.

Here’s what else you should use:

  • A good, bright light
  • A full-length mirror
  • A hand mirror
  • Two chairs and/or stools
  • A brush and/or hairdryer

The Simple Step-by-Step Skin Check Process

  1. Facing the full-length mirror, examine your lips, nose, mouth, forehead, ears, neck, shoulders, chest, arms, underarms, hands, palms, between the fingers, the fronts of the thighs, and the shins. If you’re a woman, lift up your breasts to check the undersides.
  2. Continue by bending your elbows to examine your forearms and the backs of your upper arms.
  3. Standing with your back to the full-length mirror and using the hand mirror, inspect the back of your neck, shoulders, upper back, and any part of your upper arms that you could not clearly view earlier.
  4. Continue in this position by scanning your lower back, buttocks, and the upper part of the back of your legs.
  5. Check your scalp by parting your hair – with a brush and/or hairdryer, if necessary – as well as around and behind your ears.
  6. While sitting on a stool or chair, prop your feet up and check the backs of your calves as well as the tops and bottoms of your feet, including between the toes.
  7. Finally, still sitting, use the hand mirror to examine your genitalia and any parts of the buttocks or upper legs you may have missed.

THE MOUNTAINS ARE CALLING 🎿 (*and your sunscreen better be too)

January 28, 2020
Sunscreen is always in season!
When you’re on the slopes in the dead of winter, almost completely covered by protective clothing (like us above), sun protection might not cross your mind—but for your skin’s health and safety, it really should!
For the skiers and snowboarders among us, cold weather can actually mean more time outside, and more time outside equals more sun exposure…4 to 5 percent more skin-damaging UV rays  for every 1,000-foot increase in altitude to be exact. At a 10,000-foot elevation, that gets to be a very risky 40 to 50 percent increase in UV ray exposure.
That’s concerning news for anyone at risk for skin cancer, which really is everyone. Plus, the intensity of the sun’s rays doubles when they’re reflected off the snow …quite the “snowball” effect, huh?

All that said, you can still have fun in the mountains, and do it safely, if you follow these skin health check points below.
No matter how diligently you apply sunscreen, the best defense against sun damage is the care of a dermatologist.  Schedule an appointment and we’ll give you our best insights into protecting your skin.
See you on the slopes!

Toothpaste For Acne?

July 15, 2019 by WestDerm

Toothpaste For Acne?

July 15, 2019
Desperate times call for desperate measures and it’s safe to say many of us have put toothpaste on a pimple a time or two. While it may, at times, seem effective…it’s actually doing a lot more harm than good.
Let’s start with the reason why toothpaste may (sometimes) work on acne bumps: Many toothpaste formulas contain ingredients that help decrease bacteria and oils, and can shrink the appearance of acne lesions temporarily. And after-all, toothpaste is great for your teeth so it must be okay for your skin, right?
Wrong.
In an effort to clear your acne the right way things up, we enlisted Dr. Jacquelyn Levin to give us the low-down on this oft-practiced DIY trick.
“Many toothpaste formulas once contained a chemical called triclosan that could work to kill the bacteria that causes and worsens breakouts,” says Dr. Levin. However, she also notes that “products today no longer use triclosan in their toothpaste formulas and according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, some testing suggests that triclosan could negatively affect thyroid hormones. So even if you do find a toothpaste that still contains this chemical, using it on pimples may not be worth the risk.”
Yikes.
Some other ingredients commonly found in toothpaste, such as baking soda, alcohol, and hydrogen peroxide, are known to be drying, which could help temporarily reduce the appearance of your acne lesions. The menthol in toothpaste can even create a tingly feeling that may temporarily reduce pain and swelling. While that tingly sensation may make it seem like it’s working, who wants just a “temporary” solution?
Sodium lauryl sulfate is another ingredient often found in toothpaste and it can dry up oily skin and also decreases bacteria counts. It, however, “is also a very infamous irritant. So much so that most skin care and hair care formulas don’t use this ingredient anymore,” warns Dr. Levin.
Yikes, again.
So while there may be some rationale for using toothpaste on acne lesions, we recommend sticking with medical-grade and dermatologist-recommended products that are formulated for the sole purpose of treating acne. We also have a variety of laser treatments that work great to clear acne — and help prevent it, as well. Win-win!
Overall, while using toothpaste and other at-home remedies found on Pinterest are tempting, it is safer and healthier to visit a dermatologist instead.
If you have any questions or concerns, we are here for you and sincerely want to help clear your skin the right way.
Yours in good health,

Different Types of Acne and What They Say about Your Health

Different Types of Acne and What They Say about Your Health

December 27, 2018
Are all acne blemishes the same? Is there a difference between blackheads and pimples? What about cystic acne?
Not only are they dissimilar, but they also usually require different treatments. At our San Diego West Dermatology clinic, our board-certified dermatologists: Dr. Reed, Dr. Zaleski-Larsen, and Dr. Hemperly are acne experts. We provide a variety of treatments, each designed to address different types of acne, and tailor-made to fit your unique skin condition. If you have acne that’s making you self-conscious, contact us today for a consultation so you can get the right treatment and get on with your life.

How Acne Starts

As your skin produces oil and sheds dead skin cells to make room for new ones, the pores of your skin can become clogged. Bacteria, which normally live on the skin, begin to spread and thrive in this area. As a result, the immune system goes to work attacking the bacteria, which results in a red, inflamed, and swollen pimple.

Different Types of Acne

A pimple is a closed, clogged pore that becomes red and inflamed. So how is it different other types of acne blemishes?
  • Blackheads occur when a clogged pore of a pimple fills with excess dead skin cells, bacteria, and oil, yet but does not close, and a black spot becomes visible.
  • A whitehead is a clogged pore with excess dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria on which a tiny white or flesh-colored bump develops.
  • Papules occur when the bacteria, dead skin cells, and oil push deep beneath the surface of the skin, causing inflammation and swelling in the form of small, hard red bumps.
  • Pustules can resemble an oversized whitehead because the bump that has formed contains pus, which appears as a yellowish-white center on top of a red, swollen blemish.
  • Cysts/Nodules penetrate deep below the skin and result in more swollen pustules or papules.

What Your Acne Says about Your Health

Acne can develop anywhere on the body, and where it occurs can give hints as to the condition of your health.
  • Forehead acne could signify poor digestive health, stress or, even simple skin irritation from hats and hair on the skin, which can clog pores.
  • Cheek acne could be the result of air pollution, as the skin on the cheek is affected by the respiratory system. Acne here could also be due to cell phones, dirty hands, makeup brushes, clothing, and pillowcases.
  • T-zone acne consisting of your forehead, nose, and chin is believed to result from food allergies or an imbalance of the GI tract
  • Nose acne is thought to correspond to the heart and blood pressure problems. A diet lacking in essential fatty acids found in foods like wild-caught salmon, avocados, flaxseed and olive oil may be a reason for this type of underlying health ailment.
  • Chin acne is commonly associated with a hormone imbalance.
  • Acne on the back, arms, and thighs could develop due to friction from genetics and hormone fluctuations.

Acne Treatment at West Dermatology

Individual treatments will vary due to the factors contributing to your breakouts. Treatments may include: retinoids that help unclog the blocked pores of whiteheads or blackheads. While, OTC retinoids are available, we may prescribe stronger retinoids for stubborn, more serious breakouts. Additionally, benzoyl peroxide cleansers help rid your skin of the P. acne bacteria responsible for clogging those pores.
Pustules and papule treatment involves washing with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid 2-3 times. If the wash routine does not deliver results in 6-8 weeks, an upgraded treatment plan may be necessary.
For nodules and cysts, see a dermatologist ASAP, as permanent scarring can result after healing. Only a professional dermatologist can treat these effectively and the sooner you get treatment, the less chance there is of widespread scarring. Possible options for these more serious types of acne include lasers,  light therapy, chemical peels, and minor surgical procedures to drain and extract.

Improve Acne and Your Skin Health at West Dermatology

At West Dermatology, we customize treatments based on your condition and individual needs. Because your healthy skin is our passion, we will address your concerns with compassion and support. Contact us today so we can provide you with a comprehensive consultation and address your condition.

We Did It! ☀️ We Told Skin Cancer to Take a Hike!

We Did It! ☀️ We Told Skin Cancer to Take a Hike!

November 19, 2018
This past Saturday, West Dermatology and 300+ team and community members participated in hikes we held in California, Nevada, and Arizona to send a message: We can prevent skin cancer—and save lives—through education and encouraging healthy habits.
Through our three hikes, we raised more than $65,900 (Yea!) for free skin cancer screenings, new shade structures, new sunscreen dispensers at large outdoor areas, and educating the public on the importance of skin cancer detection and prevention. To put this in the proper perspective, via the leadership of Dr. Kimberly Butterwick, Dr. Paul English, Tom Powell, Veronica Rooney, Minerva Navarette, Henry Whitehair and many other committed team members, our collective efforts resulted in the second-highest contribution to the American Academy of Dermatology in the entire United States!
As a community of healers, nothing is more important to us than disease prevention and early treatment. That commitment is especially important right now, since men’s death rates from melanoma have shot up around the world, and an estimated 9,000 US adults will die from melanoma this year. Both Chris Kane, our CEO, and Dr. Kimberly J. Butterwick, one of our nationally recognized dermatologists, gave rousing remarks that reminded everyone of what’s at stake—and the bright future we’ll have if we take action now.
Skin cancer is a serious topic, of course, but the fundraiser still made space for fun. Designated sunscreen sprayers with hot pink signs sprayed hikers and passersby, so participants could treat their own skin as they protected the health of others. As a bonus, some hikers won prizes from the dermatologist-recommended skincare brands SkinCeuticals and EltaMD. And everyone went home with a goodie bag full of sun safety products from Heliocare, SkinMedica, Colorescience, La Roche-Posay, Coppertone, EltaMD, and ALASTIN Skincare.
Most importantly, the hike met its aim: helping people in underserved communities, including kids, live longer and healthier lives. The funds raised will allow doctors to teach sun-smart habits and clear a path to early treatment for people from all walks of life—which saves lives about 97% of the time! We’re confident that we, along with our community, made a difference. Thank you to everyone who donated!

About Allergies

What are they?

Allergies occur when the body overreacts to a foreign invader, or allergens, such as pet hair, pollen, pollutants, and more. Often, allergic reactions occur on the skin, but allergies are not just a cosmetic issue: they can be uncomfortable and even painful for certain individuals. Symptoms of allergies can vary, but some of the most common symptoms include the following: fatigue, sneezing or other sinus issues, headaches, itchy (or burning) eyes, shortness of breath, and coughing and/or wheezing. Skin conditions like eczema, rashes, and hives can also result due to allergies.

What causes them?

There are various causes for allergies. Some of the most common include pets or pet hair, pollutants and chemicals, pollen and other natural irritants, cigarette smoke, certain foods and drinks, powders, and fabrics and fibers. If you have allergies but aren’t aware of your risk factors, contact our dermatologists today, who will help you identify, manage, and treat your allergic symptoms.

Common treatments?

The best method for dealing with allergies is to avoid them in the first place, which means avoiding your risk factors – that’s why it’s important that you know them. Even then, allergies can cause problems. If you have allergy symptoms despite your best efforts to avoid them, various treatments can be effective. These treatments include topical medications, such as hydrocortisone cream, oral medications (such as antibiotics), antihistamines, and moisturizing creams and/or lotions. Depending on the severity of your allergies and their causes, these treatments can help you overcome your symptoms outright or at least make them manageable.

Vitiligo (Skin Pigment Disorders)

About Vitiligo and Skin Pigment Disorders

What are they?

Vitiligo is the patchy loss of your skin’s natural color. This occurs when melanin, the pigment that determines your skin’s color, is damaged or destroyed. Although vitiligo can negatively impact your self-esteem, it is physically harmless. Vitiligo affects about 2 percent of Americans and develops in people of all skin colors; however, if you have dark skin, the contrast between the dark skin and the lighter areas of color loss is more noticeable. Moreover, this condition is often unpredictable. You may personally experience only small patches of pigment loss, but for others, the condition may be much more widespread. It can be temporary for some and permanent for others. In extreme cases, it can alter a hair or eye color and/or develop inside the mouth.

What causes it?

The exact causes of vitiligo are unknown, but several possibilities are thought to be major contributors. Among these include immune system dysfunction, certain viruses, stress, sunburn, injury, and exposure to certain chemicals. As mentioned, symptoms include the development of white patches of skin, often with reddish-brown boundaries. These white patches can appear on many areas of the body, including the forehead, eye area, lips, mouth, hands, arms, elbows, underarms, knees, feet, neck, and torso.

Common treatments

Treatment for vitiligo varies and depends on the extent of your specific form of vitiligo. Realistic expectations are important and should include reducing the contrast between your normal skin and the lighter areas and improving your self-esteem and confidence. Effective solutions for vitiligo include topical medications, sun avoidance and/or sunscreen (SPF 30 minimum), UV-B light therapy, a combination light, and medication therapy, or, in severe cases, skin grafting.

About Lupus

What is it?

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can last weeks, months, or even years. It affects not only your skin but also your joints and organs – and frequently all three at the same time. There are two common types of lupus: systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), which can affect your joints, organs, and skin, and discoid lupus, which is characterized by skin rash flare-ups on your face, neck, and scalp. The signs and symptoms of lupus are unpredictable and vary from person to person, but they commonly include recurring fevers, debilitating fatigue, skin rashes (particularly spreading across your nose and cheeks as well as under the eyes, known as “butterfly rash”), hair loss, skin lesions, swollen joints, thyroid issues, and heartburn, acid indigestion, and other GI tract issues.

What causes it?

Although the exact cause of lupus is not clear, there is strong evidence that hormones and genetics play a major role in the development of this condition. Environmental factors are also believed to contribute, including, viruses, stress, fatigue, UV rays, smoking, injury, antibiotics, and dust and dirt.

Common treatments

Keratosis Pilaris

About Keratosis Pilaris

What is it?

Keratosis pilaris, sometimes called “chicken skin,” is a common skin condition that causes patches of rough-feeling bumps to appear on the skin. Also known as follicular keratosis, this is a hereditary skin disorder that causes goosebump-like lesions on the back of the arms, thighs, or buttocks. The patches of bumps tend to get dry and itchy, particularly during the winter months. Keratosis pilaris occurs at any age. Because it is hereditary, there is no method of prevention. In some cases, it goes away on its own over time; in other cases, the condition is chronic.
Keratosis pilaris is caused by a build-up of keratin, a protein in the skin that protects it from infection. Keratin plugs up hair follicles causing the rough, bumpy rash.
If the itch, dryness, or the appearance of your skin bothers you, treatment can help. A dermatologist can create a treatment plan that addresses your concerns.

Common treatments

Treatment options include prescriptions for:
  • Medicated creams or lotions with 12 percent ammonium lactate soften the affected skin.
  • Moisturizers (urea) help loosen and remove dead skin cells.
  • Topical corticosteroids for short-term, temporary relief of symptoms.
  • Topical retinoids increase cell turnover, which reduces the plugging of hair follicles.
To help alleviate symptoms, be sure to keep the affected area moistened at all times and avoid harsh soaps.

Alopecia Areata

About Alopecia Areata

What is it?

Affecting nearly 5 million Americans, alopecia areata is a medical condition in which the hair falls out in patches. It is unpredictable; if you have it, your experience may not be the same as someone else’s. For example, you may have hair loss followed by full regrowth while another person may have only partial regrowth. Or your case may last a few months while someone else’s may last several years. In addition to patchy hair loss, other symptoms of this condition include widespread hair loss, nail irregularities (e.g., splitting or changes in color, texture, shape), and single strands of hair in or near the bald patch(es).

What causes it?

Alopecia areata occurs when your immune system mysteriously attacks hair follicles, causing hair to fall out in clumps. Although the reasons for this are still unclear, it’s thought to be related to genetics.

Common treatments?

Despite there being no known cure for this type of alopecia areata, there are ways to manage the loss of hair and/or help it grow back. Among the options are Minoxidil, an over-the-counter topical lotion also offered in prescription strength; corticosteroids for immune system suppression; Anthralin, a topical medication that disrupts the immune system and promotes hair growth; and Diphencyprone, a topical medication that disturbs the immune system to stop hair loss and stimulate hair growth.
